I lol at some of these comments calling his double hip punch "mickey mouse' without presenting any video demonstrations to debunk this. Nothing but hearsay from these arm chair schmucks. I'll quote what rokus from the martial arts journey says, If you think you're martial art works then demonstrate it, if you think something doesn't work then demonstrate that too and explain why it doesn't work. Don't be just an armchair critic, actually demonstrate. Hitchen razor's gentleman....that which is asserted without evidence can be rejected without evidence.

It should be noted that this clip was specifically addressing hitting a makiwara. (Your fist, your wrist, your arm all change with different targets.) A major point of this was to punch with the little flat surface created by putting your fist on the floor as if doing a push up. That is basically the upper body of your two first fingers. If you stand against a wall and put this punching area flat on the wall, you will notice that your wrist is bent slightly upward. You might think it is straight. I just did it, and said "hey, it looks straight". Put a ruler across the top of your fist and forearm and you will see that the wrist is not straight, it is bent slightly upward.

I had the privilege of training with both Mr. Ubl and Mr. Langley a number of years ago in Detroit Michigan. Changed my karate forever. The take aways... Mr. Ubl has no tension and hard hands. The man can hit you anytime he wants, and there is not a thing you can do to stop it. Mr. Langley delivers every technique with devastating power. He gave a great seminar on the linear and rotational components of many karate techniques. And he demonstrated the details on my Sensei and me. We did not have punching shields so we rolled up yoga mats. Terrible idea. :) Langley hits like tank. If you get a chance and can train with Mr. Ubl and/or Mr. Langley, do it. Powerful powerful experience.

It’s hard to argue with a karate genius like Ubl Sensei, but after 20 years of using the same neutral grip as he describes in the video,I tried changing my punching alignment to what he describes not to do. I have been doing it the “wrong way” for about ten years now and for me personally it is far superior. The neutral grip creates a small moment arm in the wrist, which for me resulted in more (rather than less) wrist instability. Also the middle knuckles (the ones we use to knock on a door) protrude more with neutral grip which does not seem to encourage striking with the metacarpal (base) knuckles of the index and middle finger. Basically we want a straight line structure from the two big knuckles to the elbow without any kinks. There’s always a risk of injury and like all things practise and gradually increasing resistance will strengthen the wrist. If you’re hitting harder than your wrist can withstand, you shouldn’t be hitting that hard (you’re only as strong as your weakest link) or you should re-evaluate your technique.
